Woodside is a densely urban neighborhood in the western portion of the borough of Queens, New York. The neighborhood is a mix of tract housing, apartments, and larger homes. Surrounding neighborhoods include, but are not limited to Maspeth, Astoria, Sunnyside and more. The neighborhood is somewhat old-fashioned with a mix of mom and pop stores, hair salons, corner stores and eateries. It is home to some of the city’s best loved ethnic restaurants, especially for Thai, Filipino and South American foods. It is very densely populated with approximately 48,663 people per square mile. Nearly 65% of  all residents are foreign born and common ancestries among citizens is Asian, South American, Mexican, Puerto Rican and Dominican. South Asian languages are the most prevalent followed by English, Tagalog and Arabic. The neighborhood has residential areas along with business areas and industrial areas. Most housing is renter occupied and housing primarily consists of studio through two bedroom apartments and three to four bedroom units  in complexes and high-rise buildings.

In the beginning, the area was very swampy and discouraged settlement. It was settled by farmers in the early 1700s. Farmers soon discovered the rich soil and how well crops and livestock did there. By the mid-1700s, the farmers had drained portions of the swampy lands and cut back vegetation to create more land to work. By the mid to late 1800s, several rail and trolley lines served the area and opened it up to those seeking to escape the big city. Beginning in about 1867, the area began to shift from farmland to developed land. Benjamin Hitchcock, a residential neighborhood builder, began to develop the area on a large scale and over time it grew into the neighborhood we know today.

The neighborhood spans 1.179 square miles. In 2010, the population was 45,099 and the population density was 4,495 people per square mile. By 2015, the median household income was $54031 and the median gross rent was $1,320. In the same year, the average estimated value of detached homes was $566,550 and the average estimated value of attached homes was $912,409. The current population is estimated at 51,114 and the current population density is estimated at 43,348 people per square mile. The current median real estate price is $495,137 and the current average rental price is $1,666. It is a middle income community and has a mixed workforce and job market of white and blue collar positions and works.

Public transportation is available in the form of commuter trains, subways and buses. Over half of the households in the neighborhood do not even own cars because most everything they need is literally just around the corner. Homes for sale are fairly rare and most housing is more on a rent or lease basis. What you will find is studio through four bedroom apartments and condominiums in complexes and high-rise units. As well as, three-deckers, duplexes and Victorian homes converted and divided into apartments. So no matter whether you are a single, half a couple or part of a growing family, you can find a place to belong in Woodside.
