Ozone Park is a quiet residential neighborhood located in the southwestern part of Queens, New York and is a densely urban area. It has a close-knit, welcoming front porch atmosphere that invites newcomers in. It is family friendly and fairly quiet as far as New York neighborhoods go. Sub-neighborhoods within Ozone Park, includes South Ozone Park and Tudor Village. Bordering communities include Woodhaven, Howard Beach, Brooklyn and others. It is home of the Aqueduct Racetrack where thoroughbred races are held. The vacancy rate on housing in the neighborhood is approximately 4.3%. This means finding housing can be somewhat of a challenge within the neighborhood. It is a highly walkable neighborhoods, where everything you need is just around the corner. It is an ethnically and racially diverse community. Common ancestries among residents includes, Italian, Irish, Dominican, Puerto Rican and others. English is the primary language, followed by Spanish, several south Asian languages, Italian and Chinese.
The neighborhood was created by developers in the late 1880s. The name “Ozone Park” was developed to lure residents in with promises of fresh, healthy air from the sea. The oldest neighborhood in Ozone Park is Tudor Village. it is a sixty year-old enclave and features man Tudor style homes. The community was in part developed as a factory town that grew in Woodhaven around a factory which produced stamped tin and agateware. About 100 cottages were constructed for workers of the factory. The homes were soon followed by schools and churches. Scenes for several movies were filmed in the neighborhood, including Goodfellas, A Bronx Tale, Holy Rollers, This is My Life and others. Notable residents include astronaut Charles Carmada, actor Jack Lord, actress Bernadette Peters, mafia boss John Gotti, MLB relief pitcher Neal Heaton and others. .
It is an upper-middle income community with a mixed workforce and job market with white and blue collar workers and positions. The residents too are a mix of white and blue collar people. In 2010 the population was 21,376 and the current population is approximately 23,668 and the current population. The current median real estate price is $459,472 and the current average rental price is $1,502. Public transportation is available and commuter trains are the neighborhoods most popular option.
Education in the neighborhood in supervised by the New York City Department of Education. There are eight schools in the neighborhood, four elementary schools, three junior high schools and one high school. Private schools serving the neighborhood are Our Lady’s Catholic Academy, Our Lady of Perpetual Help School, St. Mary Gate of Heaven and more. Real estate in the neighborhood is primarily small to medium sized apartments and houses. Most residences were built between 1940 and 1970. There are a number of recently built homes, but no newly built ones. There are a few homes for sale as well as apartments and condominiums for rent or lease.
