Mineola is a medium-sized village in the town of North Hempstead. It is located on Long Island in Nassau County, New York. It has three neighborhoods and is the 98th largest community in the state. Bordering communities include Garden City, Herricks, Williston Park, Carle Place and others. Mineola is governed by a mayor and board of four trustees. Over 37% of all adults in Mineola have four-year degrees or more, which is well over the national education average. It is very diverse ethnically and somewhat diverse racially. Over 32% of all residents were born outside the United States. Common ancestries include European, Asian, Hispanic and others. English is the primary language in the community followed by Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Tagalog.
The name “mineola” comes from the native Algonquin word for “a pleasant place.” The area was claimed by the Dutch East India Company in the early part of the 1600s. The English later took control of the area. From the later 1700s until the 1800s the area served as the county seat of Queens county. Winthrop University Hospital was founded in 1896. In 1899, Nassau County was formed from a portion of Queens County. Mineola was incorporated as a village in 1906. North Hempstead became the county seat of Nassau County. The county government buildings are in Mineola’s postal area, but are technically located in the unincorporated village of Garden City. The community continued to grow, the growth rising to a boom after the end of WWII and in 2006, Mineola celebrated it’s Centennial.
Mineola spans 2.2 square miles of land area. It is predominantly white-collar community, where 86% of the workforce hold or work white-collar positions or professions. It is an upper-middle income community when compared to state economic standards and a wealthy community when compared to federal standards. In 2000, the median household income was $60,706, the median family income was $71,042 and the per capita income was $28,890. In 2010, the population was 18,799 and the population density was 10,337.3 people per square mile. By 2014, the population had risen to 19,028. In 2015, the estimated median household income was $90,701 and the estimated per capita income was $41,261. In the same year the estimated median house or condo value in the community was $452,531, the mean housing price on all units was $572,425 and the median gross rent was $1,599.

Public education is primarily provided by the schools of the Mineola Union Free School District. Local schools include, but are not limited to Mineola High School, Mineola Middle School, Meadow Drive School, Chaminade High School and others.
