Hempstead is a large town in Nassau County on the western half of Long Island, which is the seventeen largest community in the state. There are 22 villages and 37 hamlets within the town of Hempstead including, but not limited to Atlantic Beach, Island Park, New Hyde Park, Baldwin Harbor, Elmont, Uniondale and many more. Nearly 16% of adults in Hempstead have four-year degrees or higher. It is an extremely diverse community both ethnically and racially. Common ancestries in the community include Jamaican, Haitian, Italian and Irish. Over 38% of the population were born outside the United States. English is the first language of the community, followed by Spanish and French Creole.

The settlement began in 1644, with the establishment of a treaty between English colonists and the native Lenape tribe. In early days the budding community was known as Heemstade and it was likely named after Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire, England. During the American Revolution, Hempstead was a town divided, quite literally. Loyalists and American sympathizers divided the town into North Hempstead and South Hempstead. Growth and development was a slow process. It was not until after WWII that growth in the area began to boom both in terms of population and in development. Today it is a thriving community with countless opportunities for residents of all ages and walks of life.

The town spans 191.3 square miles, 120 square miles of land and 71.4 square miles of water. It has a mixed workforce and job market featuring both white-collar and blue-collar positions. In 2007, the median household income was $84,362, the median family income was $96,080 and the per capita income was $28,153. In 2010, the population of Hempstead was 759,757 and the population density was approximately 4000 people per square mile. In 2015, the estimated median household income was $56,735 and the estimated per capita income was 22,462. In the same year, the median house or condo value was $316,967, the mean price on all housing units was $572,425 and the median gross rent was $1,350.

Public education in Hempstead is primarily provided by the schools of the Hempstead Union Free School District, which has approximately ten schools and more than 7,000 students. The town has more than 1,400 acres of parkland and more than 90 parks. Parks range in size from pocket park and did not want to put her name all over it.
