Elmont is a medium-sized unincorporated CDP in Hempstead, New York. It is a suburban bedroom community on Long Island in Nassau County. Elmont has approximately seven neighborhoods and is the 34th largest community in the state. It has the nickname, “The Gateway to Long Island” because of its location on the Queens and Nassau county borders. It is the home of the Belmont Park, which has hosted the Belmont States, the third leg, of the famous horse racing serious known as the Triple Crown. Nearly 29% of all adults in Elmont have bachelor degrees or higher, well over the national educational average. It is an extremely ethnically and racially diverse community. Common ancestries among residents include Haitian, Jamaican, Italian, German, Irish and Guyanese. Over 44% of all residents are foreign born. English is the most common language in the neighborhood, followed by Spanish, French Creole, Urdu and several Asian languages. Today, it is a family friendly, stable community with high rates of homeownership. The community is blessed with good schools, quiet streets, low crime rates and plenty of college-educated adults that place value on education.
In its early history, the area was controlled by Dutch settlers. Agriculture was the economic mainstay, raising cattle and sheep to be more specific. The budding village was known as Foster’s Meadow after brothers Christopher and Thomas Foster who helped settle it. In 1664 control of the area shifted to England and soon it became home to many English protestant farmers and their families. In about 1882, the name of the community was changed from Fosters’s Meadow to Elmont Stakes. Belmont Park opened in 1905 and it signaled a turning point in the communities history. Farms were sold, land divided into lots and homes were built to accommodate in influx of residents as people went to work for the new racetrack. These changes helped lead to the development of the community that we know and love today.
The CDP spans 3.4 square miles of land area. It has a mixed workforce and job market featuring white and blue collar positions. In 2000, the population was 32,657 and the population density was 9,589.9 people per square miles. From 2009-2011, the CDPs median household income was $85,564, the median family income was $99,432 and the per capita income was $22,111. By 2010, the population had risen to 33,198. In 2015, the estimated median household income was $91,652 and the estimated per capita income was $29,396. In the same year, the estimated median house or condo value in Elmont was $378,942, the mean price on all housing units was $572,425 and the median gross rent was $1,687.
Public education in the community is provided by the schools of the Elmont Union Free School District. Local schools include Clara H. Carlson School, Dutch Broadway School, Gotham Avenue School and others. Homes in the neighborhood are primarily traditional single family homes.
