Plainview is a medium-sized hamlet and CDP in Nassau County, New York. It is located in the North Shore area of Long Island. It has approximately seven neighborhoods and is the 63rd largest community in the state. Neighboring communities include Old Bethpage, Syosset, Melville, West Hills and others. Plainview shares a school system and district, public library and fire department with the neighboring community of Old Bethpage. Nearly 60% of adults in the community have four-year degrees or more, this is more than two times the national average. It is a somewhat diverse community in terms of race and ethnicity. Common ancestries include Italian, Polish, Russian, Irish, German and various Asian nationalities. Over 15% of residents in the community were born outside the United States. English remains the primary language of the community, followed by Spanish, Korean and Chinese. It is a family-friendly community, blessed with good schools an educationally minded atmosphere and quiet streets.
In 1648, Robert Williams, from Wales, became one of the first settlers to come to the area. A settlement slowly grew there and by 1695 people had begun calling it Maneto Hill. The Long Island Rail Road came through the nearby settlement of Hickville in1837, this led to a surge in population growth and development in the community. It remained a farming community for many years growing cucumbers for the Heinz pickle factories. Blight attacked the cucumber crops in the early 1900s forcing farmers to shift their efforts to raising potatoes. In 1885, the community changed its name to Plainview. After WWII, blight hit the potato crops and efforts in the community shifted again. This time to the housing boom for suburban growth to accommodate people moving out of New York City.
The community spans 5.733 square miles of predominantly land area. It is a wealthy community in comparison to both state and federal standards. It is a white-collar community, where over 92% of the workforce is white-collar. In 2007, the estimated median household income was $126,046, the estimated median family income was $ 151,780 and the estimated per capita income was $76,634. By 2010, the population was 26,217, the population density was 4,600 people per square mile and the per capita income was $50,434. In 2015, the estimated median household income was $126,801 and the estimated per capita income was $51,634. In the same year, the estimated median house or condominium value in the community was $505,975, the mean price on all housing units was approximately $572,425 and the median gross rent was $2,098.
Public education in Plainview is primarily provided by the schools of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District. Schools in Plainview which include Pasadena Elementary, Parkway School, Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK High School and Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School and others. Though Plainview is primarily a residential community, it does have a number of shopping centers, strip malls, office parks and more. The community has a variety of parks such as Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park, Maneto Hills Park Nature Preserve, Borella Fields and more.
