Bayside is a dense urban middle-class neighborhood in the borough of Queens, New York. It is one of the safest and most affluent neighborhoods in Queens. It is a relatively historic neighborhood and quite popular with urban sophisticates. It is highly walkable and family friendly. Sub-neighborhoods in Bayside include, but are not limited to Bayside Gables, Oakland Gardens and Bayside Hills. It is fairly diverse both ethnically and racially. Common ancestries among residents include Asian, Italian, Irish, South American, Greek and Croatian. English is the primary language followed by Spanish, Chinese, Korean and Greek. The neighborhood has a vacancy rate of about 6.5%, a fairly average rate for U.S. communities. This means that there aren’t too many homes sitting vacant, but there are still plenty to choose from. Real estate primarily consists of small to medium houses and studio through two bedroom apartments. Bigger homes and apartments do exist, but are more rare.

The Bayside area has been inhabited since around 2000 B.C.E. In those early years the inhabitants were indigenous people of the Matinecock tribes. English colonists arrived and began to settle in the area in the late 1600s. By the mid-1700s the area was home to a farming settlement. It largely remained farmland throughout the 1800s. The 20th century saw the area becoming developed. There was even an influx of people from the movie industry as the area became more fashionable. It has been home to many organized crime figures and families like the Gambino family and the Luccheese family. It has also seen perhaps more than it’s fair share of mob activities. Bayside has also been home to several notable, non-criminals, like comedian and actor W.C. Fields, actors and acrtresses like  Richard Dreyfuss, Rudolph Valentino, Charlie Chaplin, Gloria Swanson and others.

The neighborhood spans 2.928 miles of land area. It is a wealthy neighborhood with a mixed workforce of white and blue collar people and positions. In 2010, the population was 44,100 and the median income was $95,114. By 2015, the median household income was $79.762, the median rent was $1,611 and the average household size was 2.8. Also, in 2015 the average estimated value of detached homes %672,180, the average estimated value of attached homes was $655,504. The current population is estimated at 41,369 and the population density at $14,129 people per square mile. The current median real estate price is $744,948 and the current average rental price is $2,164.

Many residents work outside the community and face a daily commute. The average commute time for residents of Bayside is about 45 minutes. Many commute in their own vehicles, however, public transportation is available and widely used. Commuter trains are the most popular option in public transportation. Bayside is part of New York City Department of Education District #26. The district has approximately 25 schools. The neighborhood has three branches of the Queens Borough Public Library and around 10 parks/playgrounds including Fort Totten, Little Bay Park, Alley Pond Park and others. These public spaces have amenities like walking paths, playgrounds, and sports courts and fields. Most of the homes for sale were built prior to 1940 and are historically charming. Other real estate options include apartments, townhouses and more. To find your new home call local real estate agent Ed McNulty today at 516-887-3603.
