Astoria is a densely urban neighborhood in the borough of Queens, New York. It is an interesting mix of commercial properties and residential properties located in the northwest corner of Queens. It is served the 114th precinct of the NYPD. Uniquely about half of the households do not own cars so it is quite lucky that it is a pedestrian and bike friendly neighborhood. It is an extremely diverse neighborhood both ethnically and racially. Over half of all residents were born in other countries. It is a true melting pot and common ancestries include Asian, Mexican, Dominican, European, Italian and Brazilian. English is the primary language, followed by Greek, South Asian languages and Portuguese. In recent years the waterfront area has been going through renovations.

The area was first settled by Dutch and German immigrants and later by Irish, Italian and Greek immigrants. The area that would one day be Astoria was settled in 1659, under the name Hallet’s Cove. It was named for one of the first landowners in the area, William Hallet. Beginning in the early 1800s, affluent New Yorkers began building large homes in the area. Hallet’s Cove was incorporated in 1839. In the later half of the 1800s German immigrants flocked to the area. Including Heinrich Steinweg, who founded the Steinway & Sons Piano Company. The family established Steinway Village, which along with Astoria later became part of the neighboring community of Long Island City. Farms were soon sold and turned into housing tracts and Long Island City was later absorbed into the larger city of New York. Pop culture references for the neighborhood include scenes in King Kong, Goodfellas, Accidental Husband, A Bronx Tale and many more.

It is a middle-class, middle-income community with a mixed workforce and job market. The average commute for residents of Astoria is 30-45 minutes. Most structures are historic because they were built prior to 1940 and some significantly older. Most real estate is rental real estate, but there is a smattering of homes for sale.
