Cedarhurst is a semi-small incorporated village in the town of Hempstead, New York. It is located on the south shore of Long Island in Nassau County. Cedarhurst has a single neighborhood and is the 261st largest community in the state. Approximately 44$ of all adults in the community have four-year degrees or more, which is about two times the national education average. It is quite diverse in terms of the race and ethnicity of residents. However, European ancestry is the most common, Hispanic ancestry is the second most common. The community was first settled by Europeans before the start of the American Revolution. During the war the British occupied much of the area. In its early known history the budding community was known as Ocean’s Point. In the later half of the 1800s, it began changing from a rural agricultural area and developing into the suburban community we know today. The process began with the arrival of the railroad in 1869. The railroad inspired growth by making the area more accessible to those that wished to move to the area. The Rockaway Hunting Club was built in 1878 and a post office appeared in 1884. In the same year, the name of the settlement was named Cedarhurst, in part because of a request made by the Rockaway Hunting club. Development continued and the village was incorporated in 1910.
The village spans .7 square miles of land area. In 2000, the median household income was $56,441, the median family income was $71,406 and the per capita income was $29,591. By 2010, the population was 6,592, the population density was $9,400 people per square mile and the per capita income was $39,397. In 2015 the estimated population was 6,682, the median family income household income was $90,127 and the estimated per capita income is $34,230. It is an upper-middle income community according to state economic standards and a wealthy community in comparison to federal standards.
