Cedarhurst is a semi-small incorporated village in the town of Hempstead, New York. It is located on the south shore of Long Island in Nassau County. Cedarhurst has a single neighborhood and  is the 261st largest community in the state.  Approximately 44$ of all adults in the community have four-year degrees or more, which is about two times the national education average. It is quite diverse in terms of the race and ethnicity of residents. However, European ancestry is the most common, Hispanic ancestry is the second most common. Over 26% of residents in Cedarhurst were born outside the United States and are considered foreign born. English is the primary language, followed by Spanish, Hebrew and Italian. In pop culture, parts of the movie “Married to the Mob” was filmed in the village. It is a home rule community governed by a mayor and board of trustees. Law enforcement services in the community are provided by the Nassau County Police Department. Fire services are provided by the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department.

The community was first settled by Europeans before the start of the American Revolution. During the war the British occupied much of the area. In its early known history the budding community was known as Ocean’s Point. In the later half of the 1800s, it began changing from a rural agricultural area and developing into the suburban community we know today. The process began with the arrival of the railroad in 1869. The railroad inspired growth by making the area more accessible to those that wished to move to the area. The Rockaway Hunting Club was built in 1878 and a post office appeared in 1884. In the same year, the name of the settlement was named Cedarhurst, in part because of a request made by the Rockaway Hunting club. Development continued and the village was incorporated in 1910.

The village spans .7 square miles of land area. In 2000, the median household income was $56,441, the median family income was $71,406 and the  per capita income was $29,591. By 2010, the population was 6,592, the population density was $9,400 people per square mile and the per capita income was $39,397. In 2015 the estimated population was 6,682, the median family income household income was $90,127 and the estimated per capita income is $34,230. In the same year, the estimated median house or condo value in Cedarhurst was $532,286, the mean housing price was $530,84 and the median gross rent was $1,686.

It is an upper-middle income community according to state economic standards and a wealthy community in comparison to federal standards. It has a mixed workforce and job market and many work outside the community. Community is necessary for many residents, but public transportation is available. Commuter trains and private vehicles are the primary options for daily commutes. Those that live and work within the community can walk because Cedarhurst is quite pedestrian friendly. The village is part of the Lawrence Union Free School District. Schools in the village include 5 School and Lawrence Senior High School.
