Levittown is a larger hamlet and CDP in Nassau County, New York between Hempstead and Farmingdale. It has nine neighborhoods and is the 18th largest community in the state and the 2nd largest in the county by population. Nearly 32% of all adults in the community have four-year degrees or higher, which is well over the national education average. Levittown is somewhat diverse, though the majority of residents are of European descent. English is the primary language, followed by Spanish. It is a family-friendly community with predominantly single family homes and high rates of homeownership, low crime rates and quiet streets which all combine give it an uncommon stability and cozy atmosphere.
In February of 1664, the Jerusalem Purchase granted rights for English settlers to settle in the area. John Seamen was the first European to live in the area that would become Levittown. March 1st, 1837 rail service came through nearby Hicksville and eased access to the area encouraging growth in the settlement. The town was founded in August of 1929 and is named for its founder and builder Abraham Levitt. It was a planned community and was built between 1947 and 1951 by Levitt&Sons Inc. It was the first mass-produced suburb and is a model example of the postwar suburban movement. On October 1st, 1947 the first 300 families moved into the newly built community and in January of 1948 it was officially named Levittown. As the first mass-produced suburb Levittown has a permanent place in American culture and history as well as at the Smithsonian where they keep a model of a Levittown home permanently on display.
Levittown spans 6.9 square miles of almost exclusively land area. In 2010, the population was 51,881 and the population density was 7,500 people per square mile. In the same year the median household income was $150,900, the median family income was $183,851 and the per capita income was $45,917. In 2015, the estimated median household income was $101,159 and the estimated per capita income was $36,737. Further, in 2015, the median house or condo value in the community was $367,328, the mean price on all housing units was $527,425 and the median gross rent was $1,943. It is an upper-middle income community compared to state economic statistics and a wealthy one compared to federal figures. It has a mixed workforce and job market featuring both white and blue collar workers and positions.
Residents of Levittown face an average daily commute of approximately 30/31 minutes. Public transportation is available and quite popular, especially commuter trains. However, private vehicles do remain the most popular option for daily commutes. Two school districts serve the hamlet, Island of Trees Union Free School District and Levittown Union Free School District. Local schools include, but are not limited to Island Trees High School, J.
