It is located in the town of Oyster Bay and is fairly small containing only two neighborhoods and ranking as the 202nd largest community in the state. The community is a unique mix of rural agricultural lands, modern offices, historic housing and brand new condominiums. It is approximately 35 minutes from Midtown Manhattan. It is a white-collar community and workforce and approximately 77% of the workforce are white-collar. Woodbury has a higher concentration of artists, designers, and median workers than 95% of other U.S. cities. This hamlet has good schools, high rates of home-ownership, and a low crime rate. Nearly 64% of all adults in the hamlet have a four-year degree of higher. Woodbury is a wealthy community in comparison to state-federal standards. The area was first settled in approximately 1648. Many of these first settlers Quakers. The area and the budding settlement was first called “Eastwood” by these settlers. The Long Island Rail Road came through the area in 1854 and its presence soon spurred development in the town. In its early history, the area remained largely rural with dairy farms, large estates, and a growing community. In the early 1900s, a pickle plant opened giving a welcome boost to the local economy. But, despite the boost the area remained rural up into the 1950s. The 1960s brought more exclusive housing developments. Over the years Woodbury has been home to a number of notable residents including an attorney at a securities firm, Shana Madoff, the daughter of the infamous Bernard Madoff. Other examples include actress Tracy Pollan, lawyer, and politician Ogden Livingstone Mills and last, but not least Financier and race horse owner, Ogden Mills. Today it is a thriving community with homes in a variety of sizes and styles.
The community spans 5.1 square miles. In 2000 the population was 9,010 and the population density was 1,781.9 people per square mile. Also in 2000, the median household income in Woodbury was $122,643, the median family income was $139,409 and the per capita income was $58,316. In 2010, the population was 8,907 and the per capita income was $82,110. By 2013, the estimated median household income had risen to $149,187 and the estimated per capita income to $77,319. Further in 2013, the estimated median house or condo value in Woodbury was $792,585, the mean price on all housing units was $521,906 and the median gross rent was $1,987.
