Port Washington is a medium-sized hamlet and CDP in Nassau County, New York. It is located in the North Shore area of Long Island within the town of North Hempstead seventeen miles from New York City. It has two neighborhoods and is the 199th largest community in the state. Port Washington contains four incorporated villages, Baxter Estates, Manorhaven, Port Washington North and Sands Point. It is somewhat diverse ethnically and racially. Over 20%of residents are foreign born, but English remains the primary language. Other important languages include Spanish and Chinese. It is nautical in nature, meaning it has a rich maritime history, gorgeous oceanfront scenery and countless waterfront activity options. It has unique shopping options, tree-lined streets and a warm and welcoming atmosphere. It is family-friendly with good schools, high rates of homeownership and low crime rates. In 2015, according to Forbes, Port Washington was the 348th wealthiest place in the U.S.

In 1643, the indigenous Matinecock people sold land to eighteen English families who named the area “cow neck”. The settlement was later named Port Washington. Early industries were farming, fishing and later shell-fishing. In the 1870s it was an important sand-mining town. Much of the sand was used to mix into concrete, which was then used to build many of New York’s skyscrapers. The Long Island Rail Road came through in 1898 and had a station in Port Washington. The railroad helped Port Washington develop into a bedroom community to the greater New York City area. Today it is a thriving suburb full of charm, history and opportunities.

The community spans 5.6 square miles, 4.2 of land area and 1.4 of water. It is a decidedly white-collar community, where over 93% of the workforce holds white-collar positions. Approximately 8% of the workforce works from home, via telecommuting, freelance work and home-based businesses. In 2000, the population was 15, 215 and the population density was 3,613.7 people per square mile. Also, in 2000, the median household income was $105,837, the median family income was $122,646 and the per capita income was $52,815. In 2015, the estimated median household income was $108,526 and the estimated median per capita income was $61,069. In the same year, the estimate median house or condo value in the community was $741,233, the mean price on all housing units was $572,425 and the median gross rent is $1,875. Residents from Port Washington do face a long commute, approximately 35 minutes on average. Public transportation is available and many citizens of Port Washington use it for their daily commutes. Commuter trains remain the favorite among commuters in the area.

Public education for the youth of the community is provided by the schools of the Port Washington Union Free School District. It is a primarily residential community, but does feature marina’s yacht clubs, golf courses and more.
